A Democratic Party candidate has expressed his ambition to become mayor of Tirana, after being dismissed first by the Municipal Council and then by Erion Veliaj's government. The name that strikes fear into the majority is Ethem Aga, a businessman who comes from France to run, just like Prime Minister Edi Rama did 28 years ago.

But with very different stories, since at that time Rama was called by Nano to become Minister of Culture, while Aga has previously run for MP. In the 2025 parliamentary elections, Ethem Aga did not receive more than 5 thousand votes, while declaring that he is ready to run.

"The DP has some standards, it has the forum, the National Council and they are the ones who decide, while in the SP it is a single person. I will be part of the DP campaign, but there are the DP forums and other opposition parties. But, I am not turning my back on the war. I say that there should be an inclusive candidate," he said.

At least Ethem Aga has courage. Unlike many others, who "hide" and are afraid to run. But the numbers speak for themselves, especially since the difference between the majority and the opposition is very large.

Veliaj won by about 60 thousand votes more than 2 years ago, while the candidate who will challenge the majority did not even receive more than 5 thousand votes. According to the Central Election Commission, in the May 11 elections, Ethem Aga ran on an open list for the Democratic Party.

He was ranked 23rd to become a deputy, receiving no more and no less than 4,673 votes from within Albania. He represented the Farka area, while also aiming to be the “voice” of the diaspora. Outside Albania, according to the CEC, Aga received 173 votes, while the result was extremely disappointing.

In total, he received 4,846 votes and now aims to multiply these votes to be elected as mayor of Tirana.

Aga wrote in his biography that in France he was a lecturer and manager in several Franco-Japanese companies, while for 20 years he has owned golf courses and a car company. There are many Albanians employed in France, who did not become more than 170 people to vote in 2025.

He now aims to turn around some of the most profound results in Tirana, where in the 2023 local elections, Erion Veliaj was re-elected as mayor for the third time. Veliaj received 158,856 votes, while the opposition candidate was Belind Këlliçi, who received 100,425 votes. A difference of 58,431 votes, which now aims to turn around Aga!

Meanwhile, in those elections, Arlind Qori received about 14 thousand votes, Lulzim Basha's Roland Bejko received 12 thousand votes, and the others 5 thousand votes. If we add up all the opposition votes, the difference is again about 30 thousand.

But Ethem Aga's ambition is beyond numbers, as with 4,846 votes in the parliamentary elections he aims to break Veliaj's record by about 160,000. Now it remains to be seen whether Berisha, Meta from prison, or other opposition forces will trust Aga to run.
