This year's fires in Albania, the damage is over 260 million euros

From Mati to Lezhë, Fier, Vlora and further to Gjirokastër... the fires that started mainly in July and August burned about 42 thousand hectares of forests and bushes. This is the largest area burned in the last decade. Compared to 2023, the fires in 8 months of this year have burned almost 4 times more surface area.

"If we had preceded the situation with protective measures, the burned area would have been significantly lower. As every year, we face fires and huge costs due to negligence", says Abdulla Diku, forest expert, for A2 CNN.

Calculating the costs for reforestation, costs for land regeneration and losses from the burning of timber, the economic damage from this year's fires is estimated at nearly 261 million euros.

"And the worst is that after several fires, the damage is irreversible. There are surfaces which cannot be recovered as the damage is irreversible. The earth has lost its regenerative abilities and the surface cannot be revitalized", says Diku.

Despite the rains in these first days, experts estimate that the area and the economic damage from the fires may expand with the fall. "Over the years we have had many fires during the autumn months. If we have high temperatures like this year, we risk having many fires", says the expert.

According to data from the Institute of Statistics, Mirdita, Puka, Shkodra, Mati, Dibra, Bulqiza, Librazhdi, Erseka and Korça are the areas with the highest rate of deforestation, mainly as a result of fires.
