The decline in tourism in July is confirmed, the number of foreigners fell for

The positive progress of this year's tourism seems to have stopped in July, when the number of foreign citizens who entered the country decreased compared to the previous year.

By June growth rates were satisfactory, registering a total of 4.5 million foreigners, an increase of 23% compared to the same period of the previous year, promising another good tourist year.

The latest data published on the Facebook social network by Prime Minister Edi Rama show that the total number of foreign visitors in 7 months reached 6.3 million. So in the 7th month of the year, 1.75 million foreign citizens entered our country with a slight decrease of 1 percent compared to July of the previous year, when 1.77 million citizens were registered. This is the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 that July has not recorded growth.

The panorama of figures clarifies to some extent the concern expressed at the end of June and at the beginning of July by tour operators and accommodation structures in the country, which reported that the performance was more pessimistic than a year ago and than was predicted by the government.

According to them, there were three reasons for this

First, the extreme increase in prices in some regions or isolated entities that negatively affected the general perception of the entire coast. In some cases, the prices of the sunbeds were equal to the price of a hotel room, while foreigners who had vacationed in Albania a year ago, this year have faced price increases that, in their eyes, no longer made Albania economical, which has led to cancellations (mostly Italians).

Secondly, the typology of tourists this year changed and tour operators reported an influx of new and budget tourists (young tourists who spend the minimum). The latter spend mainly only on accommodation (also the most economical) and are limited to the maximum by the consumption of other tourist products and services. They are tourists who do not frequent bars and restaurants but supermarkets and fast food.

Thirdly, the departure of a part of Kosovo Albanians to new destinations as an effect of visa liberalization. This was something to be expected, despite the fact that according to official data, the number of citizens from Kosovo increased again in January-July 2024.

The government admits that there is an increase of over 22 percent, but that this does not agree with the statements of the tour operators who underline that there is a decrease in the accommodation structures in the regions that have traditionally been frequented by them such as Golem, Shengjin or Velipoja.

Despite the July figures, tour operators are of the opinion that 2024 will be a better tourist year than 2023 with the number of visitors increasing during the fall, but the summer season itself is expected to be weaker than 2023.
