The increase in foreign direct investments in our country during the first half of the year, compared to the same period a year ago, but also to previous years, seems to have been mainly driven by the trend for investments in real estate and activities financial and insurance.
According to data from the "Bank of Albania", in the second quarter of this year, foreign investments in real estate reached 97.2 million euros, or 19 million euros more than in the same period a year ago. Meanwhile, foreign investments in electricity were recorded at 53.6 million euros, which is the second highest value if we refer only to the second quarter of the current year.
If we analyze the first half of 2024, we see that foreign direct investments are mainly focused on real estate with a value of 181 million euros, from 127 million euros recorded in the same period of 2023, thus increasing with about 43%. Financial activities follow in line with a value of 126 million euros, from 117 million that were a year ago.
Meanwhile, referring to the first half of this year, the third sector in terms of the value of foreign direct investments is the extractive industry with around 100 million euros, followed by the processing industry with 89 million euros. Although the extractive industry registers the third highest value, we emphasize that it is presented with a decrease compared to a year ago when it led FDI.
On the other hand, even though the energy sector was in second place referring to the second three months of the year, in the span of six months it has moved to fifth place in terms of the value of investments with about 72 million euros.
At the end of the ranking of the main sectors of the economy in terms of foreign direct investments, we find agriculture, other service activities and education.
