Vengu: The earth is like a sponge and there is a risk of landslides, the danger
Minister of Defense, Pirro Vengu

The risk from heavy rainfall and river flows remains high this Friday evening. Minister of Defense, Pirro Vengu, present at the meeting of the Civil Emergencies Committee at the prefecture level, stated that all forces and local government structures are on alert and are working to manage the situation.

Vengu emphasized that the good news is that there is no loss of life, while the search continues for a 76-year-old woman missing in Korça.

"We have received this as information and have launched search and rescue operations. It is about an elderly person, with mental health problems. The reasons for her disappearance are unknown and it will be the search and rescue operations and investigations that will show what happened. What I can tell you is that we have just closed the Civil Emergencies Committee for the Gjirokastra region, with the entire central and local apparatus," said Vengu.

Situation on the ground

Regarding the Glina bridge in Dropull, Minister Vengu announced that residents have been enabled to cross via an alternative secondary road.

"We have also deployed forces, including the armed forces. And the Gërhoti department is functioning as a support base for Civil Emergencies for the municipalities of the district: Gjirokastër, Delvinë and Saranda. Rehabilitation is being carried out at the level of Quka in order to limit the consequences of the massive flooding in the early hours of the morning," he continued.

Vengu also added that all measures have been taken to ensure that citizens, if needed, are supplied with medicines, food and financial assistance for the damage caused by the bad weather.

The Minister announced that Gjirokastra, Delvina and Saranda have suffered massive flooding and rainfall over the last 48 hours, causing landslides on secondary roads and villages.

"The ground is like a sponge and there is a risk of landslides in the future. We are not out of danger and we must deploy all our forces," said Vengu.

The armed forces and the Gërhoti department are functioning as a support base for Civil Emergencies for the municipalities of the region, while rehabilitation works are being carried out in Quka to limit the consequences of the floods.

Damaged bridges and alternative routes

The Glina Bridge and the Isue Bridge, between Libohova and Dropulli, have suffered damage. An alternative access has been found for the Glina Bridge from Nepravishta, while a rehabilitation investment will be made for the Isue Bridge.

"Civil Emergencies are both local and central structures. They have been available on the ground for more than 48 hours. What happened at the level of Quka in Saranda has to do with a collapse and a massive landslide. The ground is like a sponge because it has been raining for three days. We are verifying once again the elements of the dams and bridges, as we have had situations where bridge legs have collapsed. We are trying to find alternative routes until we have a complete rehabilitation of the infrastructure. We have informed the people about the bad weather and we have identified the elements of the Vjosa basin for the problems that occurred. The Glina Bridge and the Isua Bridge, between Libohova and Dropulli, have been damaged. For Glina, alternative access has been found from the back, from Nepravishta. For the Isua section, we need to make a rehabilitation investment, as it is a significant damage," said the minister.

Vengu announced that measures have been taken to provide food, material and financial support to the residents of the area. He concluded his speech by saying:

"The situation is difficult, but we are working intensively to manage the consequences and secure the lives and property of citizens."
