Veliaj requests GJKKO: Not a single page of the file has been made available to me yet

The Mayor of Tirana, Erion Veliaj, has submitted an official request to the Special Court, requesting that his constitutional right to be truly and effectively acquainted with the acts of the file against him be guaranteed.

For more than 9 months in detention, Veliaj has not been allowed to read a single page of the file, because:

– The USB drive handed over to lawyers cannot be used under prison security conditions;

– the court has not made a physical copy of the materials available;

– the acts filed in court do not match those submitted to the USB by the prosecution.

According to Veliaj's request, this constitutes a serious violation of the right to effective protection and a direct violation of Article 31 of the Constitution and Article 6 of the European Convention on Human Rights.

Veliaj requires only two basic elements to exercise his defense:

a physical copy of the file, so that he can read it himself;
sufficient time to prepare his defense.
The request emphasizes that continuing the procedure without guaranteeing this fundamental right renders every further step invalid and turns the process into a formality that violates justice. The publication of this request is made in the function of public transparency, to show that one of the most important issues of Albanian justice is being developed without respecting the minimum standards of European due process.
