The Vlora Court has acquitted five police officers accused of abuse of power in connection with the tragic incident in which 7-year-old Jonada Avdiaj lost her life.

Today, the final hearing of a three-year court process against the group of five officers, who faced charges of abuse of office, was held.

In the final session, the prosecutor requested that each of them be sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison, but the First Instance Court in Vlora declared them all innocent.

The deceased's grandfather, Ismet Avdiaj, gave his speech in the courtroom. After the hearing, he told News24 that he felt deeply disappointed with the justice system.

According to him, all the claims he presented during the process were not taken into account, and the court's decision to acquit the accused officers is disappointing and unfair.

The serious incident occurred on August 2, 2022 on Potami beach, in Himara. Jonada Avdiaj, only 7 years old, tragically lost her life after being hit to death by a rubber boat driven by police officer Arjan Tase, while she was bathing on the beach with her father.

The Vlora Court sentenced Arjan Tasen to 18 years in prison for “intentional murder”, based on Article 76 of the Criminal Code. In accordance with Article 406/1 of the Criminal Procedure Code, he received a one-third reduction in his sentence, ultimately being sentenced to 12 years in prison.

Meanwhile, the case against eight other officers, accused of abuse of office, was also tried separately.

The Vlora Prosecutor's Office held them responsible for the lack of safety measures on the beaches during the tourist season, which, according to them, contributed to the tragic event.

But on July 16, 2025, after three years of legal proceedings, the Vlora Court decided to declare them all innocent.
