Leaders of the Orthodox Church in Saranda have denounced a disturbing act of vandalism, which took place near a bus stop in the area of the Çuka Canal. The object of this attack was a small church, set up as a place of prayer and reassurance for the faithful, but which unfortunately was violated in an unprecedented way.
Still unidentified persons broke the glass of the church window and then used a cane to damage the sacred icons that were inside it. The actions committed constitute a serious insult to the symbols of the faith and have been strongly condemned by representatives of the local Orthodox community.
The police have been notified of the incident and are expected to undertake investigations to identify those responsible and clarify the circumstances of this incident. It is suspected that this act may have been committed by vacationers in a drunken state, but there is still no verified data about the perpetrators. The event has caused numerous reactions in the community, especially in this summer period, where Saranda welcomes a large number of tourists and visitors.
The small church near the bus station in the Çuka Canal was built with voluntary contributions and has served as a spiritual space for passers-by and residents of the area for years.
