Davide Pecorelli, the former Italian referee and businessman, who has been imprisoned in prison 313 in Tirana since May 8 of last year, has decided to end the hunger strike that began on July 16.

During this time, he says he lost 6 kilograms, while the main reason for the strike was the lack of the opportunity to file an appeal due to the delay in submitting the motivation for the Court of Appeal's decision.

Pecorelli's situation improved on July 31, when the Court of Appeals in Albania published the reasons for the sentencing decision, allowing him and his lawyers to file an appeal.

"So far, I, together with my Italian and Albanian lawyers, have not been able to appeal due to the lack of reasons for the sentence given by the Shkodra Court," says Pecorelli.

Pecorelli was sentenced to 4 years in prison for charges including fraud, arson and illegal crossing of the state border.

During his time in prison, the former referee denounced the harsh conditions of his cell, where he shared a space of only 16 square meters with eight other people, the lack of running water, and the presence of rats.

In a telephone conversation with Italian media , Pecorelli said he is maintaining "good relations with the other prisoners, even cooking for them every evening."

He expresses hope for the future, as he awaits the next court hearing, which is scheduled for September 18th.

Pecorelli's story has received widespread attention after in January 2021 he faked his death by burning a rental car in an Albanian village and disappeared, until he was found on a dinghy near the island of Montecristo in September of that year, on an adventure that he said was aimed at finding treasure.
