The Home Office in England, Dailymail writes that it " does not recognize " claims that staff on the ship ' Bibby Stockholm ' joked that " there was one less Muslim mouth to feed " after an asylum seeker died on board.

The incident reportedly happened shortly after  Leonard Farruku , an Albanian asylum seeker, died while living aboard the " prison ship " in December.

The 27-year-old is thought to have taken his own life, many former residents told an inquest that the conditions on the barge were like being ' in prison '.

One said it made them feel like ' zoo animals ', while another claimed security staff had told them to ' shut up '.

A cleaner on the barge spoke at a meeting in Parliament and said she heard staff talking about Leonard and laughing and joking, ' oh that's one less Muslim mouth to feed '.

She said it was 'difficult' to raise concerns and added that she was once given a 'verbal warning for being too 'friendly'' after standing next to two of the asylum seekers.

The former employee also claimed senior staff had made comments that were ' often hostile and possibly racist '.

The Bibby Stockholm , moored off the coast of Portland in Dorset , is the only migrant accommodation ship commissioned so far by ministers and has faced a number of setbacks since its arrival.

The discovery of dangerous bacteria led to its evacuation last summer just days after the first asylum seekers arrived, and it remained empty for two months.

The report, produced by Care4Calais, Stand Up To Racism and the Portland Global Friendship Group , called for the immediate closure of the ship and non-renewal of its contract, as well as investment in asylum decision-makers.

Levana said she had found residents to be respectful, helpful and kind, but senior staff had made comments that were 'often hostile and possibly racist'.

A Home Office spokesman said: " We do not recognize the claims made in this report . "

Another former resident, S, told the inquest: ' When we go out and come in we have to be scanned, like airport security. A lot of people don't go out because of that . '

"One day I was standing in the restaurant and I said that the food was not good. The security staff said 'Shut up and sit down'.

The Home Office scrapped plans to buy more ships to hold asylum seekers in January.
