The implementation of the law on criminal amnesty begins today, after approval in the Assembly with the consensus of the opposition and the majority. In total, there are 3800 beneficiaries of this law. Specifically, 1,100 people sentenced to imprisonment will benefit, of which 700 will be released immediately, while another 400 will benefit from a reduced sentence.
Also, 2,700 people on probation benefit from the amnesty. Opposition protesters will also benefit from the amnesty, where 232 cases are dismissed immediately. According to the law published in the official notebook, the amnesty will benefit the persons whose sentence has been finalized until March 31, 2024.
Through this amnesty, men sentenced to 4 years or less in prison, for sentences given and which have received final form until March 31, 2023, will benefit from the total forgiveness of the sentence, while the women who will benefit will be those who have up to 5 years punishment. The measure of punishment has been increased after the later proposals, as the initial version provided for a pardon of 3 years for men and 4 years for women. According to the criteria defined in the draft, men are also exempted from serving the sentence when, on the date of the amnesty's entry into force, they have not served up to 4 years in prison, while women have 5 years left. Including fines or alternative penalties.
Beneficiaries of the amnesty are women over the age of 50 or above, while for men the effect will be when they are over 65 years old. The amnesty will also benefit minors or those who were 18 years old at the time they committed the criminal offense, or under this age.
