The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, within the framework of transparency and communication with the public, informs citizens that the situation regarding bird flu, Avian Influenza, in the country is under continuous control and monitoring, through central and regional structures.

Avian Influenza, also confirmed in our country, is a disease of particular importance and with a worldwide spread. According to ongoing communications on the official website of the World Organization for Animal Health, the disease is currently present in many other countries, which implement control and surveillance programs similar to our country.

This infection can only be prevented through the implementation of biosecurity measures aimed at reducing the level of exposure to the virus, which is spread by airborne routes and those of contact with carrier, wild and migratory birds on farms and family yards that breed poultry.

Since the confirmation of the first case, the National Crisis Center for Avian Influenza disease has been in force and meets regularly with representatives from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Interior, the Ministry of Tourism and Environment and the Institute of Public Health to coordinate actions and receive information on the measures taken by the Regional Crisis Center, which has identified the Administrative Units of the protection zones (3 km) and surveillance (10 km) for the three outbreaks in Zall Herr, Nartë, Paskuqan and the one confirmed today, 09.01.2025, in the Karavasta Lagoon.

Since the first confirmed case, the Regional Veterinary Service has taken all necessary measures to monitor the health situation of domestic birds, to isolate the infection in order to prevent its spread, while continuing communication with the Protected Areas Agency for bilateral monitoring of wild fauna in protected lagoon and water areas.

It has collaborated with the Local Health Care Units for monitoring and testing contact persons, tests which have so far resulted negative, with the Local Self-Government Units in the affected Municipalities, as well as with the State Police for the implementation of the Orders of the Minister of Agriculture in force for taking preventive measures against the spread of the Avian Influenza virus through the prohibition of the movement of live birds outside the farms, located in the Administrative Units of the protection and surveillance zones.

Given that two of the cases in the current positive outbreaks are present in wild bird species, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development invites farmers and citizens to increase vigilance and cooperate with the aim of not only timely reporting of any suspicions through rapid communication on the toll-free number 08003366, but also the rigorous implementation of biosecurity measures and limiting the exposure of birds in open environments, to reduce the level of risk of contact with wild and migratory birds.
