Albania will not extend the migration agreement with Italy beyond 2030. This was stated by Foreign Minister Ferit Hoxha in an interview with Euractiv .

The agreement between the two countries, ratified in early 2024, foresees the use of two facilities in Gjadra and Shëngjin by the Italian government for the housing and detention of migrants who have failed to gain asylum in Italy.

This initiative is part of broader efforts by several European governments to move the physical management of migrants outside their borders.

According to Hoxha, the agreement is expected to last five years and is not expected to be renewed after its expiration in 2030, a deadline that also coincides with Albania's objective for membership in the European Union.

" It is a five-year agreement and I am not sure if there will be an extension. In fact, there will be no extension because we will be members of the European Union ," Hoxha declared.

He added that, with Albania's entry into the EU, the agreement loses its "extraterritorial" nature, as Albanian territory will be considered territory of the European Union.

" Everyone has made the same calculation. Once Albania joins, this is no longer extraterritorial, but territory of the European Union ," the minister said, writes Vox News.

The agreement has sparked intense political and legal debate in Italy. Initially, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government planned to use the centers in Albania as facilities for processing asylum claims, but due to legal challenges in Italy, the facilities were repurposed as detention centers for migrants with rejected claims awaiting repatriation.

However, in April this year, the agreement received important legal support at the European level, after an advocate general at the Court of Justice of the European Union gave a non-binding opinion that the scheme is compatible with EU law.

Hoxha stressed that Albania has not withdrawn from the agreement, despite debates and legal objections.

Minister Hoxha was in Brussels for a meeting of European Union Foreign Ministers, where he described Albania as a reliable partner for Italy.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Edi Rama has previously described the partnership with Italy as "exclusive", emphasizing the close relations between the two countries.

Hoxha also rejected claims that Italy could hinder Albania's European integration in order to maintain the functioning of migrant camps on Albanian territory.

"Italy needed help. We helped. And this cannot be forgotten," he declared./ VoxNews
