Rama from Kiev: We will build a block of flats for families in Irpin

Prime Minister Edi Rama said from Kiev at a press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that Albania, together with Montenegro and northern Macedonia, will build a block of flats in the war-torn Ukrainian city of Irpin. Among other things, Rama said that Albania supports Ukraine in its request to obtain the status of EU candidate country.

Accompanied on this visit by the Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abazovi., Prime Minister Rama considered the situation in Ukraine "a horror of extreme proportions".

During his visit to Ukraine, the head of the Albanian government watched closely the destruction in Irpin, one of the cities hit by Russian forces. In this regard, Rama said that Albania and the Balkan countries will contribute to building in this city each state from a building for families whose homes have been destroyed.

" Personally, I was reluctant to come because the scale of this horror is extreme and the opportunity that Albania has to change the fate of this war is not enough at all. But at the same time I could not but respond to your invitation and we could not miss this moment with you. I am grateful for the generous hospitality and for the desire to share with us a fairly small part of the reality we have previously seen through photos.

I'm really happy that you agreed with our proposal to join efforts to build a block each of the countries building its own for Irpin's families and children. The EU and many others are already part of this effort but let us do it in a Balkan way without much bureaucracy, be the first to do it.

On the other hand, we are here to express our full support for your idea and your request on behalf of the Ukrainian people for the EU to grant Ukraine candidate status. We are more than happy to join our names with yours in this joint statement as we do not want anyone to speculate on the fact that the EU has not kept its word for us and we will probably not feel good doing something for Ukraine . No it is not so. These are two completely separate issues.

Of course we are not happy with the EU. But we are fully committed to the European journey because of the future of our future generations. We understand this ardent desire of Ukraine to have this. We have your full support for this. "I am proud to share with you that Albania, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council and co-founder of the UN resolution with the United States, has the privilege of giving a voice around that table to the concerns and demands of the Ukrainian people for a just peace." said Rama.
