About a year after Albanian institutions faced cyberattacks, the government has decided to establish a National Cyber ​​Security Authority.

According to the decision of the Council of Ministers, this authority will ensure a higher level of reliability and trust in the use of the electronic system.

"The Authority's mission is to ensure a high level of cybersecurity for networks and information systems in the Republic of Albania, as well as to guarantee security and reliability in the use of electronic signatures, electronic identification and trusted services," the decision states.

The authority, which will report to the prime minister, has been entrusted with a series of tasks, from drafting a cybersecurity strategy, to identifying and taking measures for potential attacks, to proposing the declaration of a state of cyber crisis.

"The Authority drafts and monitors the implementation of the National Strategy for Cybersecurity as a responsible institution, identifies, anticipates and takes the necessary measures to protect against potential cyber threats/attacks, in accordance with the legislation in force on cyber security; Guarantees security for trusted services, in particular for guaranteeing reliability and security in electronic transactions between citizens, private entities and public authorities, increasing the effectiveness of public and private services and electronic commerce. Proposes to the Prime Minister the declaration of a state of cyber crisis and emergency measures to resolve the situation," the VKM states.

This authority is expected to be the most important link for cybersecurity and comes within the framework of the measures that the state has taken after two major attacks in July and September by hackers from Iran, a country with which Albania subsequently decided to sever diplomatic relations.
