Albania is facing a significant increase in respiratory infections, approaching the epidemic threshold of the winter season.

Over 11,000 people have received specialized health treatment in the last week alone, both in hospital emergencies and in health centers nationwide.

According to official data from the Institute of Public Health (ISHP), 8027 cases belong to upper respiratory tract infections, while 3547 cases are related to lower respiratory tract infections. Public health experts say that so far no case of seasonal flu has been isolated, but the symptoms presented by the patients are similar to those of the flu.

"Patients present with fever, cough, moderate temperature that can reach up to 40, and in some cases even pneumonia. However, no confirmed case of influenza has been identified in the IHP laboratories," public health experts told Gazetasi.al.

The epidemiological surveillance system has also identified an increase in cases of non-bloody diarrhea during the first week of December, which is related to seasonal viruses currently circulating in the country. Meanwhile, COVID-19 continues to circulate as a seasonal virus, contributing to the high influx of patients. This week alone, the IHP has reported 1,582 cases identified in hospital emergencies.

Emergencies, under pressure from the influx of patients
Over 240 patients present every day in the pediatric and infectious emergencies of the QSUT, mainly children aged 0–7, but also adults over 20 years old.

Infectious disease doctors emphasize that the circulation of Sars-CoV-2 makes it difficult to differentiate between common viruses, the flu, and COVID, as symptoms often overlap and create diagnostic confusion.

Doctors appeal for increased caution, especially in the morning and evening when temperatures are lower, contributing to an increase in virus cases./Gazeta
