Another person has lost his life in Albanian prisons, bringing to six the number of convicts and detainees who have died in their cells in the first months of this year alone. The next tragedy occurred in Fier Prison, where a 69-year-old man died after developing health problems in his cell.
Authorities announce that the victim is Luan Bundo, born in 1957 and sentenced to 10 years in prison for illegal border crossing and fraud.
According to data provided by the prison and the Fier Hospital, the 69-year-old felt unwell on Wednesday morning. He was quickly escorted to the hospital, where shortly after arrival, doctors confirmed his death.
The victim suffered from several illnesses, including diabetes and heart problems.
In the span of three months, between health causes and suicides, six prisoners and detainees have lost their lives in the Albanian penitentiary system.
Data provided by Top News shows that from 2020 to now, over 140 prisoners have lost their lives in solitary confinement. The figures show that the authorities have failed to reflect the recommendations of international institutions and the decisions of the Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, which in 2019 fined the Albanian state precisely for failing to provide medical treatment to a convict.
