Parliament approves criminal amnesty

The Assembly voted this Thursday, June 18, with 83 votes in favor of the criminal amnesty. The majority MPs raised the green card for the amnesty which will grant immediate freedom from prison to 466 people, of whom 11 are women and only one is a minor. Meanwhile, 869 people will benefit from a reduction in sentence, among them 8 women and 1 minor.

The amnesty will benefit men who, by May 31, 2026, have been sentenced by a final decision to up to 3 years in prison or have 3 years left to serve, or women who have been sentenced or have 4 years left to serve by May 31 will be released immediately.

Prime Minister Edi Rama was also present in the Assembly, who came to vote on the criminal amnesty, while opposition MPs boycotted the vote and are not present in the hall. The session was interrupted at least 5 times because DP MPs blocked the rostrum on the pretext that the Speaker of the Assembly did not give the floor to the opposition.

Several other points were also passed during the voting process, which are for some changes to the Highway Code referring to the use of skateboards.
