Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced on Wednesday, March 18, that Iran's Intelligence Minister Esmail Khatib was killed in an orchestrated attack against him.
The killing of Esmail Khatib follows the assassination of senior Iranian security official Ali Larijani and the head of the Revolutionary Guard's Basij paramilitary force.
Who is Esmail Khatib?
As the Associated Press reports, Minister Katz said that " important surprises are expected throughout the day on all fronts ," without giving details.
The US Treasury, which sanctioned Khatib in 2022 because the Ministry of Intelligence “ engaged in cyber activities against the United States and its allies ,” had recorded his year of birth as 1960 or 1961.
Khatib is said to have been born in Ghayenat, in the South Khorasan province of Iran.
According to the Treasury, Iranian Minister Khatib “directs several networks of cyber threat actors involved in cyber espionage and ransomware attacks in support of Iran’s political objectives.”
“ In addition to malicious cyber activities affecting Albanian government websites, Ministry of Intelligence cyber actors were also responsible for publishing documents purporting to be from the Albanian government and personal information related to Albanian residents ,” the U.S. Treasury said.
This institution described the Ministry of Intelligence as "one of the main security services of the Iranian government, responsible for serious human rights violations."
“Under his leadership, the Ministry of Intelligence has repressed a large number of human rights defenders, women’s rights activists, journalists, filmmakers, and members of minority religious groups,” Thesari said, adding that the minister has also aggressively pursued individuals reporting on human rights violations in Iran, as well as their families, and tortured detainees in secret detention centers during his tenure.
In June 2025, Khatib claimed that Iran had seized documents from Israel's nuclear program.
The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency later said that the information Iran claimed to have seized on Israel's nuclear program "appears to refer" to the country's Soreq Nuclear Research Center.
Soreq, located 20 kilometers south of Tel Aviv, is a national laboratory for nuclear science founded in Israel in 1958, engaged in nuclear science, radiation safety, and applied physics.
Khatib was a Shiite cleric who had held various positions in the Iranian judiciary and the Ministry of Intelligence. He served in the Revolutionary Guard during the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s and was wounded in battle.
Iran did not immediately acknowledge Khatib's death, while Iranian state television broadcast live footage of the funeral procession for senior security official Ali Larijani, as well as the slain head of the Basij force and others, in Tehran.
Thousands of people took part in the procession, as the bodies of Larijan and his son, also killed in an Israeli strike, were paraded on a large truck decorated with images of the slain.
People waved Iranian flags during the funeral.
Iran is increasingly turning to major pro-government events during the war, as Israeli airstrikes continue to kill key leaders of the theocracy, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei at the start of the war on February 28.
Announcing Khatib's killing, the Israeli military described the Intelligence Ministry as an institution with "advanced intelligence capabilities" that carries out operations worldwide, including those against Israel.
" Khatib played a significant role during the recent protests in Iran, both in arresting and killing protesters and in shaping the regime's intelligence assessments ," the Israeli military said.
"He also acted against Iranian citizens during the protests for Mahsa Amini."
