Blockage of the Librazhd-Prrenjas axis

The head of the Albanian Road Traffic Association, Ami Kozeli, spoke at a media conference this Tuesday afternoon regarding the blockage of the Librazhd-Prrenjas road axis.

Kozeli said that a decision has been made to build an alternative route along the railway in the Shkumbin riverbed, until the situation with the landslides stabilizes. The head of the ARRSH also communicated the decisions to demolish the damaged bridge and divert the flow of the river, which is currently hitting the railway line.

"From the analysis carried out, it results that the main cause of this situation remains the impact of intense and long-term rainfall, river erosion, as well as massive soil saturation, which has led to a massive active landslide and the inability to intervene immediately until the results of the geological report are received. At today's meeting of the Joint Technical Council between the ARRSH and the Albanian Railway, with the participation of academic staff from the Faculty of Construction Geology, geologists, designers and supervisors in charge, the following decisions were made: Construction of an alternative road along the railway in the Shkumbin riverbed to enable traffic to pass until the landslide is fully stabilized. Demolition of the existing bridge, now out of operation and relief of the load on the body of the landslide road, until the creation of a natural escarpment that will enable intervention with drilling tools. A system and discipline of all surface waters have been established in the entire area of the landslide plan, "The diversion of the river flow that currently impacts the railway line, to guarantee its protection," said Kozeli.

The head of the ARA added that "the Librazhd-Prrenjas axis is a segment of strategic importance and will be restored to full function once we have guaranteed long-term stability of the terrain and infrastructure."

Asked by journalists how long it will take to complete the construction of the new alternative road, the head of the ARRSH:

"This new axis is at least 1.3 kilometers long and we cannot say a time frame. Regarding the inerts, I deny that the phenomenon occurred due to the removal of inerts."

At this media conference, Ergys Verdho, director of Albanian Railways, and Ardian Bylyku from the Albanian Geological Survey also spoke.
