Footage from yesterday's assassination

36-year-old Florian Bajraktari from Tirana escaped an assassination attempt yesterday afternoon while drinking coffee in a bar in "Omonia" in Athens. He received a wound in the shoulder from 7 gunshots from an SUV that passed in front of the bar where the young man was.

Arrested in 2006 for murder, Bajraktari was released on bail in 2018 and then in 2020 he was arrested again for gambling. The Greek police are investigating several tracks related to his assassination, not excluding revenge for the murder that happened in 2006.

On October 23, 2006, 38-year-old Albanian Niko Demo was killed in Sitia, Greece. The latter was released on bail of only 1000 euros by the Court, after being accused of murdering his Albanian wife, an event that occurred on November 9, 2005. Despite the Court's decision, the victim's family members have repeatedly accused Demona of being the author of the daughter's murder. their only 28 years old. She was found strangled in bed by the 12-year-old child. The child had been notified by his uncle, who had told him to notify his mother as something bad had happened to his father. But as soon as the child went to inform the mother, he found her dead. In fact, his father, Niko Demo, was also injured with a knife, according to him, hit by two compatriots. The police suspected that it was Demo who had strangled his wife, but after 6 months he was released after a blood stain was found in the apartment, which turned out to be neither his nor his wife's.

But after getting out of prison, a plan was hatched for Niko Demon to kill him as a sign of revenge. On 13.10.2006, citizen E. L, an acquaintance of Florian Bajraktar, approached the latter in a cafe in Kalithea, Athens, and told him that he was looking for, on behalf of a third person whose sister had been killed, someone who would undertake, against payment, to kill the husband of the woman who was killed, who according to the client was also the murderer of his sister.

Florian Bajraktari, only 18 years old at the time, told this to citizen M. B and together they decided to kill the person, against a fee of 5000 euros for each. After receiving from the intermediary EL detailed information on the victim, namely his name, which was Niko Demo, his photographs, residential address and a postcard of the city of Siti in which the area where his house was located was circled, the license plate of his car as well as 500 euros in advance, traveled by ferry to Irakleo and by KTEL bus to Sitia, on 19.10.2006.

There they prepared their act for three days, gathering information about Niko Demon. They initially looked for him at the address, but did not find him. Then Florian Bajraktari called E. L and told him that they could not find him at the address he had given them and he told him that he would ask about the new address and tell him.

They finally found the victim's house, which they began to observe. The car was parked outside the house, which according to the information they had received from the person driving it, EL, belonged to the victim. On 23.10.2006 and in the early hours of the morning they set up an ambush at the entrance of the palace and waited for him in a garage. The day before, they had taken a knife from an oven, which they were going to use for the murder. As soon as Niko Demo appeared, whom they recognized from the photos they had in their hands, leaving the palace and heading towards his car, they attacked him and after Florian Bajraktari neutralized him, M. B tried to cut the throat with a knife. But he encountered difficulties, as the knife did not cut him and while Niko Demo, already wounded in the neck, was calling for help, M. B neutralized him and Florian Bajraktari managed to hit him three times in the back of the head with the metal part of a hoe. His death eventually came as a result of these blows.

Then the perpetrators left the scene in different directions. They met on the beach of Sitia and after replacing the bloody clothes with clean ones, which Florian Bajraktari had brought with him and throwing the hoe into a reed bed of an adjacent river, they parted. The first headed to the intercity bus station, where he was arrested on the same day, holding the postcard with the handwritten sign of the victim's previous residence, while the second headed to the KTEL bus station, where he waited the first for several hours and because he was running late, he got on the bus to go to Irakleo. Outside the City, the bus was stopped under the control of police forces and the accused, realizing that he was noticed and would be arrested, got off the bus and left in the fields. He was arrested the next day in the Ahladion area of Sitia, where he was spotted trying to escape on foot towards Irakleos.

The Greek police also discovered the person who commissioned the murder, citizen F. G, who was arrested. During his statement before the investigator as well as during his statement before the Court, he denied the accusation, claiming that he was informed about the murder of his son-in-law while he was at the workplace in Lamia, that he did not have the financial means to pay the amount above-mentioned to pay third parties in order for them to kill his son-in-law and that he never made threats against the victim. These allegations, according to the prosecution, were not proven. Specifically, it was proven that the client's family from the beginning considered the victim's husband, Niko Demo, responsible for the death of their daughter and sister E.. Criminal proceedings were initiated against Demos for the death of his wife, in which he was temporarily detained.

However, his release from prison in May 2006, replacing temporary detention with restrictive conditions, caused an increase in disagreement between him and his ex-wife's family, on the one hand because it was considered that the release of the "murderer" was "unfair", and on the other hand, because the issue of custody of the victim's children was raised, which the victim's family also claimed after the release of Niko Demos from prison. The clear and consistent conviction of their son-in-law's guilt is not denied but repeated by all family members in all discussions, as well as in their examinations before the authorities. The spirit of revenge that ensued was further fueled by the legal dispute over the claim of custody of the minor children by both parties.
