The document sets objectives ranging from protecting the environment and underwater cultural heritage, to the sustainable development of tourism, energy and maritime transport, to promoting cross-border cooperation.
A day ago, Greece officially adopted the National Spatial Strategy for Maritime Space (NSSMS), an important act that defines the country's Maritime Spatial Planning (MSP).
The press release distributed by the Greek Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasizes that this plan presents a comprehensive framework for the development of a blue and circular economy, respecting the environment and regulating the uses of marine areas in accordance with European Directive 2014/89/EU and international law.
In a post on the social network Facebook, Professor Dr. Osman Metalla explains the map attached to this official document, which describes the maritime borders of Greece, including undivided areas, for which there are mutual claims with the Republic of Albania.
According to the professor, these areas, located near the islands of Othonoi and Erikousa , are subject to negotiations or a possible international judicial process and cannot be treated as genuine Greek sovereign spaces.
The case is similar to that of 2022, when the research vessel " Ramform Hyperion " conducted oil exploration in a disputed area near the maritime border with Albania, without any visible reaction from the Albanian authorities, despite obligations arising from the Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
It underlines that the presentation of such borders in official documents without a bilateral agreement or court decision constitutes a violation of the principles of international law and directly harms Albania's positions in any future international process.
In this context, a clear response is required from Albanian institutions, including the Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, as well as informing the United Nations General Secretariat.
The lack of an official stance could not only be interpreted as tacit acceptance, but also significantly worsen Albania's position in any possible legal confrontation in the future./ Keeptalkinggreece
