Ervin Karamuço, a professor of criminology at the State University of Tirana, believes that gangs from around the country are turning to tobacco to increase their income.
"It is not surprising that, in addition to arms and drug trafficking, Albanian criminal organisations are also involved in cigarette smuggling into the UK. Although this activity is not as profitable as drugs, it remains a significant source of criminal income," he told the Mail newspaper.
Professor Karamuco suggested that corrupt customs officials were turning a blind eye to illegal tobacco shipments, or were actively organizing them.
