On the eve of the parliamentary elections held on Sunday in Greece, the two Albanian candidates, Fatos Malaj and Pati Vardhami, say that if they win the mandate, they will be strongly committed to protecting the rights of foreign immigrants, the majority of whom are Albanians.

"My goal is to be the voice of the vulnerable and immigrants to raise the political agenda, the big problems they face, providing solutions with integration and equality policies," Fatos Malaj, who is running in the Greek capital, told the Voice of America. Athens, for the PASOK Party - Movement for Change.

"My election campaign slogan is "United for Change" and I strongly believe that only united we can succeed and bring change, said Mr. Malaj.

According to him, "many of the fellow Albanian citizens who have contributed for many years to the Greek economy and society are still anxious about the status of their stay in the country. Others encounter obstacles in their final step to full integration, to citizenship. New challenges such as retirement are already on the horizon, especially for our immigrant colleagues who have contributed to Greece with their work and taxes."

Fatos Malaj is a certified cultural mediator in the Directorate of Foreigners and Immigration, with many years of experience in legal services related to immigrants.

He founded the Non-Governmental Organization "AROGI", which works in the defense of human rights by undertaking a series of initiatives to improve the legal framework of immigration in Greece.

During the period 2012-2016, he was a member of the United States Human Rights Section.

Another candidate in the Greek parliamentary elections is Pati Vardhami, who is running in Athens for the "MeRA25" Initiative.

"The first years here have not been easy and have required mental and spiritual strength from everyone as the institutional obstacles have been great," said Pati Vardhami for the Voice of America.

Graduated in Business Organization, Political and Social Studies, as well as Contemporary Philosophy and Art in Athens and London, she said that "she had work experience in all three of these fields and was currently working in the contemporary art sector.

According to the official data of the Greek Ministry of Emigration, from 2011, when Greece adopted the new Law on citizenship, until December 31 of last year, 115,815 Albanian citizens have benefited from Greek citizenship.
