The Italian government has decided to use the Gjadri and Shëngjin centers, in Albania, to detain illegal immigrants awaiting deportation.
After almost a month of announcements, Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi's plan is now before the Council of Ministers.
Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is trying to restart her project after the stalemate in the courts.
And it does this by deciding to transfer to Albania those who are awaiting deportation orders because they have already been denied the right to asylum.
Now, immigrants who do not come from safe countries will also end up in the facilities.
The decree will modify the law for the implementation of the Italy-Albania protocol signed by Giorgia Meloni with Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama , in Rome.
As Italian media report, with this decision, migrants detained in Gjadra can remain there for up to 18 months, until their countries of origin accept their return.
Illegal immigrants, detained in the immigration detention center in Rome, will be transferred to Albania to await deportation, but must then return to Italy for their final return to their countries of origin.
Considering that on average only 50% of immigrants detained in reception centers actually manage to return to their countries, an increase in costs is expected due to the continuous transportation between Italy and Albania, as each detained immigrant must be accompanied by two police officers./ Open
