The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, said he knew the party would split when it was declared non grata by the US.

He also confessed what he said to Lulzim Basha.

"Even in the '90s, I didn't get angry with anyone who attacked me. Why? Because I told myself 'look, let them say whatever they want, because they're not the ones who are violating your psychology'. I was looking for things that were taboo and it seemed like I was going against the regime they wanted, they're not dictated to as people think. I was one of those who was disturbing their psychology. I was passing through the Përmet Souk and a woman dressed according to the time came up to me, she had taken a dirt base and threw it at me. I asked her why she threw it at me, 'go away, you're like this, you're like that', she told me. I shook her hand, she had a callous, a cooperator.

I was not angry. When I called the rostrum, my close people said to me 'what if they don't come', I told them '8 people coming is enough for me'. I get excited with the large presence of people. I don't get upset even when there is a small presence. Aware of this... I knew that the party would split. I had not imagined some of the things the ambassador could do, but I knew that people would be concerned about this decision by America. I was extremely calm. I told Basha 'Lul, don't get involved in this matter, neither you nor the party. I told him I will solve it myself, with Hoti's principle , "said Berisha.
