The head of Hellenic diplomacy Georgos Gerapetritis, in an interview for the state channel ERT, dwelled on all the current issues of Greek diplomacy, giving special importance to the case of Fredi Beleri, who has been in detention cells since May 12 accused of vote buying.

According to the Greek diplomat, the detention of Beler by the Albanian authorities is an illegal act and violates the rule of law. Even Gerapetritis talks about an own goal by the official Tirana, which with this behavior can be stopped on the way to the EU.

"From the beginning, our government has undertaken a series of initiatives not only for his release but also for creating the opportunity for me to take the oath. We have noted that these obstacles lead to an escalating tension. With the way it works, the Albanian side is probably scoring an own goal.

The removal of Beler's mandate as mayor of Himara would mean a serious deterioration of Greek-Albanian relations. There is no way that the process of Albania's membership in the EU can continue when there is such a violation of the rule of law and the presumption of innocence of Fredi Beler," Gerapetritis said.

Saying that the manner of handling the issue constitutes a serious obstacle on Albania's path towards the European family, the Greek Foreign Minister added that the created tension is not at all useful for the neighboring country.

If Fredi Beleri does not take the oath within the six-month period stipulated by the Albanian legislation, he automatically loses the mandate of the mayor of Himara.
