The European Union Delegation in Tirana has expressed serious concerns regarding the Albanian government 's proposal for " Fiscal Peace ", emphasizing the need for safeguards against money laundering and the reduction of tax exemptions.

European Union reaction:

The European Commission has discussed the Fiscal Peace proposal with the Albanian authorities, including at the meeting of the Subcommittee on Trade, Industry, Customs and Taxation on 25-26 November.

The Commission highlighted serious concerns related to the discouragement of tax compliance and reiterated the need to put strong anti-money laundering safeguards in place in the proposal, while continuing to engage in reducing the large number of tax exemptions.

We expect these concerns to be addressed.

We further recall that the EU Common Position on the core group underlines the importance for Albania to ensure that “possible amnesties and voluntary tax compliance programmes are consistent with the country’s plans and advance the fight against organised crime and are in line with the relevant EU acquis and international standards, such as those set by Moneyval and FATF.”
