New Criminal Code, LZHK: For some very serious offenses, the death penalty

The Movement for National Development has demanded that the death penalty be restored in the new Criminal Code.

Recent discussions about this Code seem to have also affected this political subject, clearly placed to the right in ideology, as, through a statement to the media, LZHK says that it reconfirms its position that, for some well-defined categories of very serious criminal offenses, in negotiation and understanding with the EC, the death penalty should be restored, until Albania becomes a member of the EU.

"Movement for National Development" expresses its position that after 30 years of the adoption of the current Criminal Code, it is necessary to change our criminal legislation with clearer definitions and measures that go in favor of the protection of freedom and citizens' rights", LZHK mentions in the statement.

"The amendment of the Criminal Code is necessary to toughen the penalties for very serious crimes against human life, organized crime, corruption, drug trafficking and other serious crimes and not to mitigate them.

In the draft of the new Criminal Code, two dangerous tendencies are observed: one is the one that classifies minor violations as criminal offenses and punishes them with imprisonment, which is a repressive measure against citizens, while the other is the one when serial killers sentenced to life imprisonment receive pardons!

The Movement for National Development has one more reason to react to the draft of the new Criminal Code, because it has continuously proposed to the higher state institutions that against very serious crimes against life, which are increasing, to review the criminal sanctions to toughen them and, for specific crimes, up to the restoration of the death penalty.

LZHK has continuously expressed itself officially and concretely: "Currently, crime is not afraid of the state, it is not afraid of the law. The killer thinks that, as long as the death penalty is banned, he will at least live, and even find ways and means to get out of life imprisonment. Therefore, it is imperative that, for some well-defined categories of very serious criminal offenses, in negotiation and understanding with the EC, the death penalty be reinstated, until Albania becomes a member of the EU. ”

This position of the LZHK, not only has not been taken into account so far, but the opposite is being attempted: The new Criminal Code creates spaces for the release of prisoners with life imprisonment, clearly proving the assessment that the opposition has continuously made that the policy of the highest levels in Albania is linked to organized crime, why not ordered by crime.

For the above, the Movement for National Development reaffirms its position that the restoration of the death penalty in Albania is a necessity!

The Movement for National Development" called on the initiating institutions to withdraw the draft of the new Criminal Code. On the contrary, it will ask every citizen, intellectual, lawyer, every representative of civil society, every political actor who believes in the values of freedom, democracy and the rule of law, to oppose this draft in all ways."
