Greek Foreign Minister Jorgos Gjerapetritis has reacted again regarding the rejection of the request for a milder security measure by the Supreme Court for Fredi Beleri.

According to the Greek Foreign Minister, this decision is negative and has warned Albania to respect the rule of law if it will be part of the European family. Gjerapetritis has also called on the Albanian government to ensure the immediate swearing-in of Beler inside or outside prison.

"The decision of the High Court of Tirana to dismiss the appeal of the pre-arrested mayor of Heimaur, Fredis Beleris for release from prison with restrictive conditions comes in addition to the previous decisions of the Albanian courts, which essentially remove Mr. Beleris of the right to swear an oath and undertake the duties assigned to him by the citizens of Heimaurra", declared the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Giorgos Gerapetritis, Greek media reports.

"This is a negative development, which constitutes a clear violation of the basic principles of the rule of law, which Albania must respect and adhere to if it wants to become a member of the European family. We call on the Albanian government to to ensure immediately, legally or administratively, the immediate swearing of Beler inside or outside the prison", he emphasizes.

Gjerapetritis also said that the Foreign Ministry will continue to closely monitor the development of the case and will raise this issue in all international forums.

Fredi Beleri was arrested two days before the elections on May 14, where he also won for the Municipality of Himara. He was imprisoned for passive corruption in the elections, with his associate Pandeli Kokaveshi, while the latter was released at the beginning of June, due to his health. The lawyers had asked for a lighter measure in the appeal filed in the high court, but the trial panel did not accept their arguments.
