The United States Chargé d'Affaires in Albania, Nancy VanHorn, stated that relations between Albania and the United States are stronger than ever, while praising Albania's journey from isolation to democracy and integration into the Western alliance.
During the official reception on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of US Independence, VanHorn recalled that on July 4, 1776, America's founders proclaimed the principles of equality, liberty, and the right to pursue happiness, values that, according to her, continue to guide the country today.
"For nearly two and a half centuries, there has been no greater barrier to tyranny and oppression than these powerful words. For 250 years, America has been a beacon of hope for people around the world who long to breathe freely," she said, also quoting President Donald Trump.
VanHorn particularly praised Albania's transformation after the fall of communism.
"Albanians know well the desire for freedom. Your nation's journey from oppression and isolation to democracy and Western alliance is one of the great success stories of our time. You are building a society and institutions that promote freedom and justice for all, through courage and sacrifice," she said.
The American diplomat also shared the story of Loni Adami and Kol Kuqali, two former employees of the American Embassy in Tirana, who, according to her, were killed by the communist regime after refusing to testify falsely against the United States.
“Their belief in freedom and in the unbreakable bond between Albania and the United States remains an inspiration to us all,” VanHorn said.
She emphasized that the partnership between the two countries has been strengthened in various areas, including military cooperation, trade ties, and support for democratic values.
"Our bond is stronger today than ever before. We will continue to work together to preserve a world where freedom reigns, guided by the principles of peace through strength and partnerships built on mutual respect and shared interests," she declared.
