Norwegian shipbuilding company Ulstein seems to be one step closer to building the vessels of the future.

The new ship he designed is called Thor - after the Viking god of lightning and the radioactive element thorium - which will power its nuclear reactor.

According to the project, the 152-meter-long floating vehicle will never need to be refueled and will be able to generate all the electricity it needs to function on its own. There will even be enough energy to propel the accompanying ship, named Sif - after another Viking deity, who was also Thor's wife.

Thor will use a nuclear reactor originally tested in the 1960s, which also uses liquid-salts as fuel. According to scientists this will be a much more ecological way of navigation, but also much safer.

Although it is the main ship, the Thor has a capacity of 60 passengers, while the Sif, can carry 80 passengers and 80 crew.

Both ships have an unusual kitsch, called the X kitsch, which is used on about 100 ships worldwide. According to the Ulstein company, this kite makes the ship more stable, while also reducing energy consumption, in addition to making the journey safer, despite the waves crashing on it.

Thor's ability to generate electricity enables the ship to also serve as a powerhouse for port cities or other areas in the event of natural disasters. The ship also has drones and helicopter landing tracks, which may be needed in case of search-and-rescue operations.

But despite the good that this ship promises, according to the manufacturers it will take several years - about 10 or 15 - before it becomes a reality.
