Masonry is indisputably one of the most discussed global phenomena.
Between the veracity of historical facts and the various conspiracies connected with the figure of the Masons, mysticism has always characterized groups no longer secret, but in closed groups of people.
For Albania itself, this was a somewhat special year related to Masonry, as for the first time, the Masonic Union of the Balkans held a meeting in Durrës, during the first weekend of June, with Masonic brothers and sisters, coming from all over the region, even including Europe or the US.
Masonry in Albania
For many people, having masonry in Albania is nothing but an urban legend.
For others, the conspiracy that Masonic lodges are located all over the world, to seize power and direct world politics, is a reality - including Albania.
For Albanian Post, it is Raimond Todhe, the Grand Mason Master of the Grand Lodge of Illyria, who sheds light on the beginnings of true Masonry in Albania.
According to Todhe's explanation, there have been individual attempts to introduce Freemasonry in Albania since the 1800s.
The year 1865 would see the formation of Freemasonry in Turkey and the end of the 1800s, would see its entry into Albania, which would be interrupted by communism.
According to many claims, it was the advent of democracy that brought about the first groupings (thought of by many Simasons) - the so-called "Rotary Club" or "Lions Club".
Todhe, however, clearly divides the period of the beginning of true masonry in Albania, with the beginning of the 2000s.
He says that the "Rotary Club" or the "Lions Club" are not Masonic lodges, although the presence of Masonic members within them is not excluded.
"Many members of 'Rotary' and 'Lions' are also Masons", he explains for Albanian Post, "because both clubs have always been a territory where Masonry recruited".
The first lodge officially recognized by other European ramifications, is the Grand Lodge of Albania, officially established on October 14, 2011.
"The biggest help for the creation of this lodge, came from the Masonic brothers in Italy and Serbia, with the homologous lodges, which recognized the Great Albanian Lodge", explains Todhe.
Later, other lodges were recognized, such as the Great Albanian Lodge Iliria, where he was chosen Grand Master himself.
Religion and Freemasonry
A very widely discussed topic is that of the relationship between religion and Freemasonry.
Todhe clearly explains that there is no relationship between the two - at least on the part of the Masons.
The same is confirmed by the Masonic brother from Turkey, Cuneyt Kalpakoglu, who is a former Grand Master of the Turkish Liberal Lodge.
Kalpakoglu explained to Albanian Post how the approach of Freemasonry in this aspect has changed.
"In the past, it was necessary for a person to have a belief in a creator, to be part of the Masons," he says. "But today the same is not true. You can also be an atheist, there is no problem, as long as the real goal is enlightenment of the mind.
Further, he also explains how the ritual has changed.
Whereas before, the oath to be part of a lodge was performed on a sacred book, today it is no longer such a need.
"It could also be an empty book, with white pages, to symbolize your thoughts, which the Masons respect," he continues. "The oath can still be taken on the Bible, the Qur'an, on any holy book."
The same is stated by the Grand Master Todhe, who outlines the fact that in reality, Freemasonry does not deal at all with religion, but the latter deals with Freemasonry.
"The church over the years has created this perception for Masons, as if they are opponents, as if they are on the side of evil," he says. "This is not true anyway because we are not dealing with religious doctrines. "We do not judge them."
Politics and Freemasonry
The greatest conspiracy over Freemasonry is necessarily related to the influence on policy-making.
There are many theories, where it is written that Freemasonry is a dark side of society and that this side is what controls the world.
However, such a conspiracy is categorically denied by both Todhe and Kalpakoglu, who argue that Freemasonry has no influence in politics.
At least, not directly.
They articulate that the participation of Masons in politics is like the normal participation of any part of society.

So, with people engaged in this field, who convey their thoughts and vision on how politics should act.
Beyond that, there is nothing else about how Masons are involved.
So like any stakeholder, Masons are represented by their own people, not in the shadows, but publicly.
For this reason, they do not refer to themselves as a secret organization, as many present them, but as a closed organization, where a person can apply to join freely, based on predetermined criteria.
