Lowest number since 2003! Eurovision publishes list of participating countries

The Eurovision Song Contest will welcome only 35 countries to next year's competition after several countries boycotted Israel's entry.

This is the lowest number since 2003, before semi-finals were introduced and qualifying places were added.

The Broadcasting Union has confirmed the list of public broadcasters that will participate.

Spain, Ireland, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Iceland have withdrawn. Bulgaria, Romania and Moldova are returning after a break.

Next year's semi-finals in Vienna will be on May 12 and 14. The grand final will be held on May 16.

It is expected to have a more diverse jury and improved voting controls.

The EBU said it hopes the changes will ensure the contest remains "a neutral space to showcase music, talent and unity, free from undue influence."

Most recently, Nemo and the Irish winner of Eurovision in 1994 returned their trophies in protest of Israel's participation.
