An Albanian candidate for the prestigious "Booker" prize
13 books nominated for the prestigious Booker Prize

The 13 books nominated for the prestigious "Booker" prize have been announced, and among them is an Albanian-American author.

Ledia Xhoga has been nominated for the $67,000 prize with her book "Misinterpretations".

The story is set in modern-day New York City, where an Albanian translator reluctantly agrees to work with Alfred, a torture survivor from Kosovo, during his therapy sessions. Despite her husband's warnings, she quickly gets caught up in her client's anxieties. Alfred's anxieties awaken her buried memories, and an impulsive attempt to help a Kurdish poet leads to a dangerous encounter and a reckless plan.

As unfortunate decisions pile up, jeopardizing the unnamed narrator's marriage and mental health, she embarks on a spontaneous journey to be reunited with her mother in Albania, where her life in the United States is put in a strong light. When she returns to face the consequences of her actions, she must question what is true and what is not.

Ledia Xhoga's first novel, Misinterpretation, examines the darkest legacies of family and country, as well as the line between compassion and self-defense.
