Are you part of the group of people who eat their nails every day? If the answer is yes, then you belong to a third of the population which struggles every day with this problem.
It is not just an aesthetic problem. That is, psychologists argue that for most people eating nails is a sign of nervousness and difficulty, which in fact makes sense.
Recent research has brought new results according to which eating nails can be a sign of perfectionism. Broadly, this is justified by the definition of perfectionism, that is, individuals who eat nails every day can be perfect, as they can not relax and get things done at a normal pace. They are prone to frustration, intolerance and dissatisfaction when they do not achieve their goals and the result is this bad habit.
Experts explain that there are two reasons why people eat their nails. The first explanation says that in this habit they provoke negative emotions and side effects, so this habit seems to them as a "discharge valve". The second thought is similar, explaining that people eat their nails to relieve impatience, boredom, frustration and dissatisfaction.
In addition to being emotional, eating nails also has health consequences. Daily eating of the nails causes pain and redness of the nails and cuticle, bleeding and potential infections of the nails and fingers, risk of transmission of bacteria and viruses through the mouth to other parts of the body, weakening of tooth enamel and irregular teeth.
Of course, not to mention the fact that people who eat their nails leave a very bad impression on others.
