The story of the chicken that lived 18 months without a head and

Seventy years ago, a farmer beheaded a chicken, but she refused to die. Mike, as the chickens were called, survived for 18 months and became famous. But how did he survive so long?

On September 10, 1945, Lloyd Olsen and his wife, Clara, were slaughtering chickens on their farm in Fruita, Colorado.

He beheaded the chickens, and his wife cleaned them.

But one of the 40 or 50 slaughtered chickens did not behave like the others.

"She was still alive and walking around," said the couple's great-grandson, Troy Waters, also a farmer in Fruita. The chicken kicked and ran, and did not stop.

They put it in an old apple crate to spend the night. When Lloyd Olsen got up the next morning to see what had happened, "she saw that damn thing was still alive," says Waters.

"It's part of our family's weird story," says Christa, Waters's wife.

Waters had heard the story when he was little, when his great-grandfather came to live with their family after he was sick.

The old man talked for hours about the chicken. Words began to spread throughout the area about the miracle of the headless bird.

A local newspaper sent a reporter to interview Olsen and two years later, a circus promoter, Hope Wade, went there.

He had a simple proposition: get out in the circus and make money. They first visited the University of Utah, where the chicken underwent several tests.

University scientists were said to have beheaded many other chickens to see if they would survive.

It was here that Life magazine became acquainted with the story of the miracle chicken Mike.

Meanwhile Lloyd, Clara and Mike embarked on a US tour. They moved from California to Arizona and Hope Wade took Mike on tour in the southeastern part of the country when the couple had to return to the farm to harvest.

The bird's journeys are carefully documented by Clara in a book preserved with weapons today by Waters.

People from all over the country wrote letters to them, not all positive. One compared them to the Nazis. After the first tour, the Olsen family sent Mike to a show in Phoenix, Arizona, when disaster struck in the summer of 1947.

"Here he died, in Phoenix," says Waters. Mike was fed liquid food and water, which was poured directly into his esophagus. They carefully cleaned the mucus from his throat.

They fed him drops and cleaned his throat with a syringe. The night he died, they woke up in the motel room to the sounds of a drowning bird. They quickly searched for a syringe, but had forgotten it in the circus.

Olsen never told what happened to the dead bird.

But how did he survive so long?

The thing that surprises Dr. Tom Smulders, a poultry expert at the University of Newcastle, is the fact that the bird did not draw blood.

The fact that he could live without a head, he easily explains. A person can lose his head and that means losing your brain.

For a chicken it is different.

"You would be surprised to see how small his brain is," he says.

It is mainly concentrated behind the eyes. Reports say Mike's beak, face and eyes were removed with one blow.

But Smulders thinks about 80 percent of the chicken's brain and everything that controls the chicken's body, including the heart, respiration and digestion, remained intact.

It was suggested at the time that Mike survived because part of his brain remained attached to his body.

But why did those who tried to recreate this case fail? It appears that in Mike's case, the incision was fixed in place, creating a clot that prevented bleeding.

Olsen reportedly tried to replicate the success, but failed. When he returned to the farm, he asked people to rent them beers, as he had become very rich.

In fact he made some money, bought a lawn mower and two tractors, replacing the horse and mule.

He also bought a Chevrolet pickup truck at the time. "However, he spent the rest of his life again as a farmer," says his great-grandson.
