All in 5 years for Carolina López Moreno. She debuted as a soprano in 2021, has sung for Mehta, Gatti and Pappano, and in the next 3 years will perform at the famous Italian theater, La Scala three times (and has decided to live in Milan).

She will also debut in La Bohème, Puccini's opera, which she will also perform on December 20 at the "Maggio Musicale Fiorentino", conducted by Ceretta and directed by Ravella.

And about a month later, on January 14, it will go up to the Rome Opera, conducted by Bignamini and conducted by Livermore.

Carolina, a generator of positive energy, is 34 years old, her mother is Albanian from Tirana, while her father is Bolivian from Santa Cruz.

Carolina was born and raised in Germany and as a daughter of Albanian-Bolivian immigrants, she tells of the hardships of life and how music entered her life.

She recounts her life in an interview with Corriere della Sera.

Unusual origin…

Like their meeting, which took place in Germany. In 1990, the German consul helped those rebelling against the communist regime in Albania escape as it was collapsing. My mother was part of the student movement; she understood that she had to either break free from that life or die. She organized herself clandestinely, listening to the radio secretly, knowing that this could mean violence, prison or death. My mother had a little daughter at the time, my older sister, and yet she made that radical choice.

What about your father?

Dad was in Germany on a scholarship. He played music and sang for fun; he is still part of a Latin American band, Citlai Calli, with which they perform at village festivals. I used to join them from time to time. I like to dance. We are six children. We were poor, we never went on vacation, and the refrigerator was half empty. But there was love.

How did music enter your life?

My mother taught me to play the violin, but she was too strict and it didn't work. I switched to piano. I played by ear. At the age of 12, I started writing soul and blues songs, the first of which is called "Feeling." That's the key to my life.

Why?

Music embraced my soul and animals shaped my character. I have a spiritual and intuitive relationship with both.

What does this mean?

I took care of the horses, I cleaned them. I learned a lot from them. At school in Germany, where I was born, I had difficult years for many reasons, but not because of racism; my parents experienced this more, and I grew up in the multiethnic neighborhood of a city with a difficult-to-pronounce name, “Reichenbach an der Fils”. It was difficult; when I was suffering, I found refuge in the horses, who were able to awaken an instinctive compassion in me. For my first CD, “Il bel sogno”, I wrote the notes of the song with all my heart, but the German producer at the record company mocked me: you are “kitsch” (tasteless copying of an existing artistic style). But I am a spiritual person in all my manifestations.

And how do you manage to control your emotions on stage?

Before I go on stage and let myself go, I think about my mentor, Donata D'Annunzio Lombardi, how she prepares me to perfection. And I tell myself that I can't make mistakes. I study everything about an opera: the historical, social and human context.

What did you understand about Mimì from La Bohème?

She is a girl who is not well, who is trying to move forward, to fall in love, who wants to stay with that group of penniless young men until the end.

Almost all the heroines of the opera die.

But the theme of sacrifice is always relevant. I would like to sing an opera about a woman of our time. I think of Jennifer Robinson, Julian Assange's lawyer, who, between the power of the state and an individual, chose the man, without seeking visibility. I also think of Yusra Mardini, who, while fleeing Syria, saved her life by swimming and pulling a sinking boat. Then she continued to swim until the Olympics.

You were talking about "soul" music, how did you discover opera?

I have a multifaceted background; I even wrote rap songs in German to get out of it. When I was 18, my teacher told me to listen to Callas and Pavarotti. I had never heard of them before. Maria Callas amazed me. I would like to play her in a movie. I saw it with Angelina Jolie, who is talented, famous, and did well in opera, but that movie didn't feature Maria's early work. Then I would like to play in a movie about Lina Cavalieri, who died in the 1940s and was also a beautiful woman. I know they made a movie about her, but that was many, many years ago.

You are also extremely beautiful. How do you turn down guys who want to date you?

I'm direct. You smile, I say I'm not interested, but thank you.

The two bohemians this week?

In Florence it is traditional; in Rome there are animations and film screenings. I really like Zeffirelli's. If there is a strong motivation, innovative direction is fine. At "La Scala" I will sing Poulenc directed by Robert Carsen, then I admire Castellucci, Michieletto, Strassberger, but when they talk to me about a bohemian scene on the moon...
