Stockholm could experience its darkest December since 1934

Stockholm has recorded less than half an hour of sunshine since the beginning of December, which, if this trend continues, could make it the darkest December since 1934.

"Sweden, like other Nordic countries, is accustomed to long, dark winters, with shorter days and longer nights due to its location in the north.

"But this December has been unusually dark and cloudy in Stockholm," meteorologist Viktor Bergman, of the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute, told AFP.

So far in December, the month is not over yet, there has only been half an hour of sunshine. We have had unstable low pressure systems with mild and humid weather. The sky has not had a chance to clear. The sun has been weak and its rays have not been able to disperse the clouds.

According to data collected from 1991 to 2020, the average amount of sunshine in Stockholm for the entire month of December is about 33 hours.

The darkest December ever recorded in the Swedish capital was in 1934.
