Instagram has introduced a new feature called "Instagram Map," which allows you to share your location in real-time with friends and maybe even people you wouldn't want, such as ex-partners or colleagues.

This feature includes both the places you've marked yourself in posts or stories, as well as the last location where you opened the app, even if you haven't posted anything. Many users have been surprised when they appear on the map without knowing it, which has prompted Instagram to clarify that this only happens if the user activates the feature themselves.

However, privacy experts and youth advocacy organizations warn that location sharing can be dangerous exposing users to stalking, social pressure, or relationship control. There are particular concerns for teenagers, as the location can reveal their daily habits, such as school or home.

Users can choose who sees their location or turn off this option entirely. It is recommended that the location be shared only in special cases, through more secure tools such as FindMy or messaging apps, where control is greater and risk less.
