Former president of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), Luis Rubiales, was pelted with eggs and tomatoes, apparently by his uncle, during the presentation of his new book yesterday in Madrid.

Rubiales, convicted of sexual assault after suddenly kissing Spanish player Jenni Hermoso on the lips after Spain won the Women's World Cup, had not appeared in public for several months and his first appearance did not go well.

"I discovered that he was my uncle, his name is Luis Ruben," Rubiales told the news portal Periodista Digital.

"He threw eggs at me because he is a crazy person and I don't think there is any justification for that. They have arrested him, they have taken him away and we will have to take action against him because I honestly thought he was armed," said the former president of the Spanish football federation.

National police said a man had been arrested, but declined to confirm the family connection.

Rubiales tried to follow his uncle before being stopped by other people at the event. Speaking on Spanish television this week, Rubiales claimed he was the victim of a “sudden far-left movement” that created a “parallel reality” to capitalize on the issue surrounding his kiss with Hermoso.

Rubiales was fined 10,800 euros for the kiss, which he insists was consensual, and his lawyer said in June that Rubiales would appeal the conviction to the supreme court after a Spanish appeals court upheld his fine.

Spain's penal code dictates that a non-consensual kiss can be considered sexual assault, a legal category that includes all types of sexual violence.

The incident caused global uproar and Rubiales resigned from his post. He was banned from all football-related activity for three years and the federation was plunged into a prolonged period of turmoil.

The incident made Hermosa, the all-time leading scorer for the women's national team, a focal point of the fight against sexism in sports.
