A British company, Shanta Gold Limited, has discovered a large gold deposit in Kenya, worth an estimated $5.29 billion. According to The Star Kenya, the company confirmed that the discovery includes 1.27 million ounces of gold, one of the largest quantities ever verified in the country.

The mining project will be managed by subsidiary Shanta Gold Kenya Limited, which is expected to use advanced open-pit mining technology aimed at minimizing surface impact. The company says the operation could bring significant economic development through job creation, local business growth and increased fiscal contributions to the Kenyan state.

The project envisages the construction of a processing plant with a capacity of 1,500 tons per day, a 12-megawatt power plant, and a storage facility for mining waste. The total cost of the infrastructure is estimated at 146 to 180 million euros.

For Kenya, which produced just 410 kilograms of gold in 2023, the discovery is seen as a chance to become a major new destination for mining investment in Africa. In the Fraser Institute 2023 ranking, the country already holds sixth place on the continent for attractiveness to mining investment.
