The six-fingered hand becomes a reality
Hand with 6 fingers

The six-fingered hand already exists, but the smallest one is actually robotic. Japanese and French scientists have created the artificial finger to study how the brain can respond to an extra part of the body.

Sensors on the user's forearms turn electrical activity in their muscles into instructions for the sixth finger.

The researchers say the 18 participants easily moved the sixth finger, indicating that our brain has the ability to embody artificial replacement limbs.

Researchers say more studies are needed to explore the brain's ability to work with other attached limbs and its flexibility to use them at will.
