Elections in the north, Kurti: We agree, but the violent gangs must return to
Albin Kurti

The Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has said that he agrees to early elections in the north of Kosovo, but first, he said, the gangs supported by Belgrade must return to Serbia or be arrested in Kosovo.

In an interview for the American television NBC, Kurti said that the details for the new elections will be discussed with the special envoy of the European Union for the dialogue between Kosovo and Serbia, Miroslav Lajcak and the special envoy of the USA for the Balkans, Gabriel Escobar , who are expected to visit Kosovo next week.

"I do not deny the possibility of new elections, but we must first establish justice in the country. Once the gangs in the north must be brought to justice. For de-escalation, the violent gangs must either return to Serbia or be arrested in Kosovo and then we can have early elections", Prime Minister Kurti said.

"Next week, Lajcak and Escobar will come to Kosovo and we will discuss the details. I also believe in early elections, but we also need law and order first", he said.

Kurti said that the Albanian mayors who won in the northern municipalities have low legitimacy, but he said that they are legal.

"The mayors who won the municipalities have low legitimacy due to low participation. We invited the citizens to vote, but Belgrade blackmailed them. We must stop Belgrade from bullying the Serbs of Kosovo", he said.
He said that Serbia, and especially Russia, prevents Kosovo from succeeding as a state.

"Russia does not want Kosovo to succeed as a country, because we are a NATO success story. We are not a big country, but we are a good example of how democracy and the economy can grow together", he declared.

Asked by the journalist Chuck Todd if the police forces of Kosovo have used excessive violence, Kurti said that this cannot be proven, because the Police of Kosovo is a professional force trained for years by the USA.

"There is no evidence that the Kosovo Police has behaved in a wrong way. They have been trained for 20 years by the United States of America. On the other side we have the gangs, who are here to destabilize Kosovo", he said.

The EU has increased the pressure on Kosovo, while Germany and France have demanded new elections in the 4 municipalities in the north of Kosovo. There are 4 requests that the EU issued for Kosovo:

New choices now.

1. To ensure the participation of Kosovo Serbs in them.
2. Start work on the establishment of the Association of municipalities with a Serbian majority.
3. Bringing to justice those who attacked KFOR soldiers.
