European Commission President Ursula Von der Leyen has delivered a strong message on the current state of the European Union and the global challenges facing the continent.
In a speech to members of the European Parliament, Von der Leyen stressed that "Europe is in a critical state," and called for a rebirth of Europe as an independent, united and peaceful power.
During her speech, Ursula von der Leyen focused on today's situation in Poland, where over 10 Russian drones were shot down that were intended to attack Ukraine.
"Today we witnessed an irresponsible and unprecedented violation of Polish and European airspace by more than 10 Russian Shahid drones. Europe expresses its full solidarity with Poland," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
"Putin's message is clear and our response must be clear as well. We must exert pressure, more sanctions, we are preparing the 19th package of sanctions, to hit Russian energy.
"We are particularly appreciating the faster elimination of Russian fossil fuels, we are looking at the dark fleet and third countries and, at the same time, we need greater support for Ukraine. No one has done more for Ukraine than Europe, starting with 117 billion euros. It should not be only European taxpayers, Russia should pay for the damage it has caused to Ukraine. Therefore, we must work quickly to find other options for the reconstruction of Ukraine, by seizing Russian assets," von der Leyen said.
"Europe will defend every inch of its territory. In every country I have visited, I have heard the same message: there is no time to waste. At the next European Council, we will present a clear plan to launch new joint defense projects, set clear objectives for 2030 and create a European Defense Semester. 2030 is tomorrow and Europe must prepare today," von der Leyen stressed.
She added that a defensive wall with drones will be built over Kiev.
“I can also announce that Europe will pre-donate 6 billion euros from the G7 loan and sign a drone alliance with Ukraine. Ukraine has the smarts. What it needs now is industrial scale. And together we can ensure this: that Ukraine maintains its competitive advantage over Russia and Europe strengthens its own. We will build a drone wall ,” Ursula von der Leyen said in Strasbourg.
Von der Leyen has declared, among other things, a 3-point plan to protect Gaza and punish Israel.
"The commission will do everything it can do. We must stop all payments to the state of Israel, civil society in this state.
Secondly, we must decide on further action with the European Parliament against extremist ministers, against those who incite violence in this region, and we will propose the suspension of the association agreement with Israel until the violence in Gaza stops. I am aware that this will be difficult to find support from all member states and may seem excessive, but we must take responsibility.
"The third plan is to provide humanitarian support for the reconstruction of Gaza. This will be an international effort in cooperation with European partners," von der Leyen said.
She also added that the hostages should be released immediately, aid distributed to the area and an agreement reached.
"But in the long term we need to have two states, and an end to the terror by Hamas. It is time to reach an agreement between the parties so that peace can be achieved," von der Leyen added.
