The United States Department of Government Efficiency, which was led by entrepreneur Elon Musk, has ceased to exist eight months after the end of his term.
Scott Kupor, Director of the Office of Personnel Management, claimed that DOGE: “No longer exists.” This was reported by several international media outlets citing Reuters. Kupor added that DOGE is no longer a “centralized entity.” Many of the former agency’s functions have now been taken over by the Office of Personnel Management.
Shortly after taking office, US President Donald Trump announced a series of measures to reduce the size of government and combat bureaucracy. Among other things, he created DOGE with an executive order signed on his first day in office after returning to the White House, tasking Musk with overseeing its work. Today's statement confirmed suspicions that DOGE was ready to close its doors, suspicions that have circulated significantly recently, especially given the "cooling" of relations between Trump and Musk.
His departure marked the end of a chapter that included thousands of layoffs, the closure of government agencies, and a series of lawsuits. Elon Musk significantly lowered his goal for cost cuts — first from $2 trillion to $1 trillion, then to $150 billion.
From time to time, he clashed with other Trump administration officials who considered his attempt to change the structures of their departments unwelcome.
