Two weeks after the meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, the US president is giving clear signals that a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine may no longer be his priority.

In an interview with the conservative media outlet Daily Caller, Trump said that "it's possible that they (the Russians and Ukrainians) have to fight a little longer... continue this crazy war," describing the current moment as inappropriate for negotiations.

From enthusiasm to disappointment

Just a few days ago, Trump had announced his initiative for a bilateral meeting between Putin and Zelensky, as a follow-up to a summit held on August 18 with the participation of European leaders. But since then, his position has changed significantly.

Earlier in the week, he said that “it takes two to tango,” while on Tuesday, in a cabinet meeting, he did not hide his nervousness: “It’s all theater… just nonsense.” Meanwhile, after a bloody Russian attack that left 25 people dead, including 4 children, and also hit the offices of the EU delegation in Ukraine, his spokeswoman, Karoline Leavitt, said that “the president is not happy with these developments, but not surprised either.”

Possibility of a meeting between leaders?

In the same interview on Friday, Trump floated the idea that a trilateral meeting between him, Putin and Zelensky could still be feasible. “Sometimes people are just not ready,” he said, comparing the situation to two children fighting on a playground: “At first they don’t want to stop, but after a while they get tired and agree to stop.”

Will Trump step down?

Behind the scenes, the US administration is seriously considering withdrawing from its role as mediator, due to the lack of progress and clashes with European allies. Secondary sanctions or massive trade tariffs are also on the table, as a “plan B” if Russia does not show a will for peace.

According to CNN and Axios, Trump is considering simply “standing aside” and not intervening further until the parties show “more flexibility.” But no clear deadline has been set. Although on August 22 he said he would make a decision within “two weeks,” this is not the first time he has used such a deadline without following up with any concrete action.

"We'll decide whether there will be sanctions, tariffs, or we'll do nothing and just say: this is your fight," Trump declared.

Trump blames some European countries for the failure of negotiations

According to Axios' sources, some of Trump's White House advisers blame European leaders, not Putin, for the failure of the peace effort. They claim that some EU countries have secretly undermined the negotiations, encouraging Zelensky to have unrealistic expectations on the territorial issue and hope for a more favorable deal later.

A US official said that "the British and French have been constructive", but that some other European countries want the US to bear the main burden of the war, while they themselves are reluctant to get seriously involved.

Pressure from political base

At this point, Trump’s own electorate is divided: the nationalist-populist MAGA wing wants the US out of a conflict that is “not our war,” as Trump himself put it. But he stressed that support for Europe could continue in the form of air security guarantees, and he mentioned with pleasure the fact that NATO is paying for American weapons going to Ukraine.
