TikTok announces sale of US assets

The Chinese company told employees on Thursday (18.12.2025) that ByteDance and TikTok signed binding agreements with three managing investors: Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX, to form a new TikTok joint venture in the US called TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC.

The deal, which is expected to close on January 22, would end years of efforts to force ByteDance to give up its US business due to national security concerns.

TikTok's Chinese owner, ByteDance, signed binding agreements with three major investors to sell just over 80% of the company's US assets to American and global investors to avoid a ban by the US government, TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew told employees on Thursday (18.12.2025).

The agreement is a major step toward resolving years of uncertainty about the future of the short-form video app in the United States since August 2020, when President Donald Trump first tried unsuccessfully to ban the app, which is now regularly used by more than 170 million Americans.

The US joint venture will be held 50% by a consortium of new investors, including Oracle, Silver Lake and MGX with 15% each; 30.1% will be held by affiliates of several existing ByteDance investors; and 19.9% will be held by ByteDance, the memorandum said.
