French Culture Minister Rachida Dati has been placed under judicial investigation for corruption and influence peddling, after allegedly receiving 299,000 euros from energy company GDF Suez while she was a member of the European Parliament, without declaring their source.

On Thursday, authorities conducted searches at her residences, the Ministry of Culture and the municipality of the 7th arrondissement of Paris, where Dati is mayor. Investigations have been opened for active and passive corruption, misuse of public funds and money laundering.

According to French media, the payments are suspected to have been made through a complex financial scheme, with two transfers of 149,500 euros each. Dati has always denied working for GDF Suez, but documents seized by investigators mention notes such as “Dati Honoraire GDF Suez.”

The minister is also involved in another corruption trial, along with former Renault-Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn, which is expected to take place in September 2026.

Currently, Rachida Dati is in the Senate, while her lawyers have not commented on the matter.
