According to Reuters, citing two European officials, a United States military intervention in Iran appears likely and could occur within the next 24 hours.

The report comes at a time when tensions in the Middle East have increased significantly in relation to recent weeks of large anti-government protests in Iran and a harsh crackdown that has caused thousands of casualties and arrests.

The US has raised the possibility of military intervention in response to the violence against protesters and has begun withdrawing some personnel from key military bases in the region such as Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as a precautionary measure in the face of potential risks of an Iranian retaliation.

The report adds that another European official and an Israeli official have also assessed that the US government may have made a decision to intervene, but that the exact scope and timing have not yet been clarified.

Iranian authorities have warned that they will strike US military bases in neighboring countries if Washington takes military action against Tehran.

The events come as the United States and its allies aim to balance pressure on the Iranian regime with the risks of a military escalation of the conflict in the region.

The United States has begun reducing the number of personnel at Al-Udeid Air Base in Qatar. The decision comes as a "precautionary measure" due to rising tensions in the region.

The news was confirmed by the Qatari government, which stated that this step is being taken to ensure security in light of recent developments between Washington and Tehran.

The bloody figures of the protests

According to human rights groups, the situation inside Iran is critical as over 2,400 protesters have been killed during the violent crackdown by the authorities.

Over 18,000 people have been arrested so far, while at least 12 children are confirmed to be among those killed.

The protests began in late December due to the economic crisis and the decline in the value of the local currency, but quickly turned into calls for political change.

A region on alert

This is not the first time that the Al-Udeid military base has been targeted. In June last year, Iran fired missiles at the base in response to US attacks on its nuclear facilities.

While the US says it is monitoring the situation around the clock, the Qatari government is taking measures to protect its critical infrastructure and the safety of its citizens.
